on selecting the right frame versionOct 01, 2008
By David Fiorino The mount looks great and works great with the Topeak bags that are designed for it. I bought the side frames also because I got the EXP bag with panniers. The rack mounts pretty fast and easy to your seat post and the frame supports also go on pretty quick. I also put the MTX fender on, which I wasn't sure would go on with the pannier frame. It all integrates perfectly. I am going to post a picture soon. Make sure you put it on tight and realize it is really a commuter rack. If you are using it while hitting rough trails on a mountain bike expect it to shift around some if you have much loaded on it. As for frame selection I chose the A frame and it was an incorrect decision for me and so exchanged it for the V. I was afraid the V frame would sit too close to my tire with the fender on so I opted for a high set up. You should try to mount it low so as not to raise the center of gravity or battle the weight of the filled bag. The reason for the A frame is if your mounting it on a small bike with a low seat with little clearance from seat to tire. The equivalent of a BMX bike. The E frame should work for a lot to play it safe including road and mountain bikes. The V frame will work on quite a few as long as the tire isn't too big. I have a 26" mountain bike tire and it sits a few inches from the tire. Oh if you have a wedge under you seat you can probably keep it on but it is a tight fit. So far I love the look and other than one incident of it shifting have loved the performance. Best for smooth terrainNov 12, 2008
By Martin Arrowsmith Ummm. This is the 3rd Topeak Beam Rack that I have owned. The other 2 have broken at the weld joints. The first two probably lasted a total of 3 years and about 6000 miles. You may ask, why do they break and why do I keep buying? Well, I think that they break because, while I use this rack on my commuter bike, my riding style may be better considered urban mountain biking. Riding up steps or down sets of stairs are common occurences and, in the end, I guess this riding style puts too much stress on the welds. I keep buying new racks because the Topeak pack that goes with the rack has held up well through this whole time and cost a significant chunk of change itself. The slide mechanism that holds the pack on the rack is absolutely fabulous. So, we'll see how long this 3rd one lasts. Next time I may go to a local steel shop and see if they can make something custom.
In summary, if you are going to use this on smooth terrain it is an excellent investment. The topeak pack/rack system works really well and the different packs available are remarkably verstatile. I have had no problems with the quick release mechanism, since once I put it on I rarely ever took it off. If you are going to be bouncing around alot, then it may be worth doing a little more research and evaluating other options. Ride On.

Great purchase!May 12, 2007
By Nancy B. Purchased this rack with the MTX bag for our second bike, so now both my my husband and I both have one. We enjoy riding long distance charity road rides, and this set-up is perfect: take extra energy bars, ibuprofen, another T-shirt, or stash extra clothing. At home, my husband will make a run to the grocery store on his mountain bike, slip the bag off his rack, and pack it up in the store, slip it back on outside, and away he goes. It can be switched from bike to bike easily enough, and you looks nice enough that we've been asked where we got ours. Like I said, the fact that we're on our 2nd rack and bag should be proof enough that this is a winning combo.

Great productMay 03, 2007
By S. Gale I use this for a Nashabr zip off backpack that mounts on side rack. It makes my commute to work easier and I don't have to worry about things bumping out. The only problem I have had is that on turns sometimes the weight will shift and push the side rack and MTX rack in towards the tire. Then I can hear it rub, and have to stop and readjust it. This is rally a problem with the MTX rack not the frame.

Not exactly what you expectJan 09, 2008
By Andrew Dunn I bought this thing thinking I could remove it when ever I wanted. So if i wanted to go on a long ride, and I didn't want to transport anything, I would be unencumbered. However, this is not the case. If you put anything over 5 lbs on the rack then it will move around and really mess up your ride. So to compensate for the swaying you have to screw it on so tight that you have to use tools to remove it. This works a little, but doesn't completely stop it from moving if you got more than 10 lbs on it. So now i am stuck with this thing and since I bought the bag that clips onto it I am forced to buy a stationary rack. They system is a great idea, but I think the Topeak MTX BeamRack needs more refining. I recommend just getting a topeak stationary rack with the MTX bag system.
