Good Replacement For NowMar 27, 2009
By Bill S.

I own a 93 Specialized Allez Epic with Dura Ace components. The bike sat in the garage for a number of years before I got back into cycling. I purchased these to replace my old Dura Ace 7403 shifters. I got tired of purchasing bad used replacements on E-bay. A mechanic at my LBS found these for me.
I ran into a big problem. The mechanic could not get them to shift into the two highest (small) gears on the rear cassette. He thought the old 8 speed derailer might be bad, but the same problem happened when I gave him a spare derailer I had. He got them to work with an entry level Sora 9 speed long cage derailer. I did some internet research and found out that when Shimano introduced 9 speed in 1997 they changed cable travel of the rear derailer so that the whole line of their products was compatible from then on. Refer to Sheldon Brown's web site for more information on this problem. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html
You can't buy new 9 speed Dura Ace or Ultegra rear derailers in the bike shops because Shimano no longer manufactures them and 10 speed derailers won't work on 8 speed. I went back to E-bay and purchased a new 9 speed Dura Ace rear derailer. It works perfectly with the shifters and my 8 speed cassette.
The shifters themselves are OK. The right shifter shifts very smoothly through the whole range of gears. I notice a bit of difference between it and the Dura Ace model, but not enough to matter. The left shifter has a noticeable "klunk" in it. This might not matter to most touring riders, but to someone used to high performance racing parts, it is huge.
It's not a deal breaker for me though. I'm happy to be able to be riding with shifters that work. These will do fine until I can find a New Old Stuff set of Dura Ace shifters on E-bay. I didn't buy a set last summer when it showed up on E-bay because I thought the price was too high, but now I wish I had. They will only cost more next time. It's still cheaper than buying a new bike, which I hope do sometime down the road.
These shifters do a good job. Buy them on Amazon. It's the best price. I bought mine from my LBS for much more because I didn't know I could get them here. These shifters will make most people happy, but if you are looking to match them with old high performance 8 speed, you may run into the problem I experienced. I hope this review helps.

Wonderful Replacement/UpgradeJan 25, 2009
By Steven P. Albano

I purchased the ST-R500 shifters to replace on older style worn out set. Everything necessary for complete installation was included. Directions were adequate, and the actual installation went smoothly. Once the shifters were on the bike and the cable tension adjusted my son took it for a ride. And another ride, and now many more. So far with lots of club riding and a few hundred miles they are still working like day one. If you have an 8 speed road bike in need of new or upgraded shifters, these should do the trick!

Smooth Shifting S.T.I. LeversJun 18, 2010
By Ruele Nelson I bought these S.T.I. levers for a Raleigh R700 Comp road bike. Installation was a breeze on FSA Omega bars with an OS-190 stem. What I like about these levers is they allow me to shift from the drops, since I am almost always in the drops. The shape of these levers is a huge step up from the old-school, plain, non-S.T.I. brake levers I had before. Climbing is much easier now; the shape of the levers makes it easy to get leverage if you pull on the hoods while ascending. You can also shift while standing on the pedals, something I could never do with non-S.T.I. levers.
The aesthetic and performance quality of these levers is comparable to Tiagra levers. Having 8-speeds means you don't have to shell out cash at a bike shop for narrow chains if you put in a lot of miles -- there's less maintenance, too. Coming from old-school indexed style shifters, these levers make cycling easier, and most of all, safer. I can brake while down-shifting, without taking a hand off the bars, as I roll to a stop. Shifting is articulate, fast and amazingly smooth in either direction. There is no "clunk". However, I miss the association of a "clunk" confirming I've completed a shift. These levers shift so smoothly I shift though the block just to make sure it really is shifting. Still, with the lack of any "clunk", these shifters inspire confidence to sprint to city limit signs. I'm sold! This is a great product, and I would recommend it to a friend.

Good 8 Speed STIApr 10, 2009

Just upgraded a 1993 8-speed Giant Cadex CFR 2, equipped with Shimano 105 (older model 1055SC), that had been sleeping in my garage for over a decade. When I originally purchased the Cadex in 1993, I had it converted to a triathlon bike and was missing the brifters. I installed road bars and the ST-R500's yesterday and I am amazed at how well they work.
I purchased them from Niagra Cycle. They were delivered in a timely manner, but Canadians beware that import duties, custom brokerage and taxes add ~CAD$80.
The installation kit (includes stainless steel cables) and instructions made the installation relatively simple. I downloaded the Sora derailleur adjustment instructions from the Shimano Technical Document web-site and I have to admit that my Cadex never shifted better.
This is an excellent upgrade for an old 8-speed Shimano 105 bike that my still have downtube shifters. In my case, this much more economical than transforming my Cadex to a 9 or 10 speed bike.

Shimano High Grade BriftersNov 16, 2008
By Charles W. Goehring
"SchwinnBill"
The Shimano ST-R500 brifters are definately high grade. The shifting is crisp, the set up relatively easy, and the brakes are more responsive than with the original Sora brifters. If you still have an 8 speed, I would recommend these brifters. Niagara Cycle Works got the brifters to me in less than a week!
