4Perfect (almost)Sep 22, 2011

This thing just works. The quality is there, it ratchets almost silently, and easily lasts a couple of years. After that, it's only a $20 replacement. There are more expensive models which can be serviced, but I think this still work s out cheaper.

Definitely recommend for a single speed.

Update: I initially rated 5 stars, but decided to move it down to four after cold weather problems. These were not problems because of dirt or anything like that, but because of a design flaw. When I tried to ride my bike in the winter, I started to get skipping problems around -5*C (23F), and at -10*C (14F) I could spin the cranks all day, and they would not catch once. When I brought the bike inside, within a minute it was back to normal.

So, either the grease inside becomes viscous at cold temperatures, or the steel ratchets loose their springiness (less likely). Or maybe the bike shop that installed it for me put a viscous grease inside before I could say anything.

So, I would be cautious about this if you ride in cold weather (below freezing). Works absolutely fine above freezing though - and it's a bargain too.

This product does what it's supposed to do. Used it on a single speed bike and it works great as far as I can tell. The threads need to accept Shimano freewheel.
