4Good computer for Shimano Flight Deck compatible leversOct 05, 2010
By Dat N
This computer is great if you have Shimano Flight Deck compatible brake/shift levers. You won't be able to take advantage of the features if you do not have Flight Deck compatible levers though.

Been using this computer for several group rides and it seems like a pretty good one that meets most rider's needs. Takes a little bit of set up time, but it has worked flawlessly for me. The computer head did not come with any instructions, but I beleive they package the instructions with the harness (sold separately). Make sure you buy the correct harness so that it fits with your model of Shimano levers. The SC-6502 has your basic features including speed, distance traveled, odometer, cadence, timer, max speed, avg speed, etc. One note, the cadence feature is an estimated cadence based on your gear selection and speed, not the actual cadence you are pedaling.

The best feature about this computer is that it allows you to see which gears you have selected. Also with Flight Deck compatible levers, the buttons to change the mode on the computer are integrated into side of the brake levers. Although this is nice option so that you don't have to move your hands much to change modes, I've noticed that I've pressed the buttons accidently quite often on my first ride. Once I adjusted my thumb positioning on subsequent rides, this was not a big issue.

One other thing that might be a plus is that the wireless wheel sensor appears to transmit upwards from the front fork in a cone shape pattern. This seems to help prevent getting interference from other riders who may have the same computer. I have another computer (inexpensive Bell model) that will get interference from other riders if they have the same model. So far it hasn't happened with the Shimano computer, but probably not a lot of other riders have this computer either.

Pros:
- Lets you see which gear you have selected
- Integrated buttons into flight deck compatible levers
- Estimated cadence
- Easy to use once you figure it out

Cons:
- Mode buttons on side of brake levers can be pressed accidently so it takes some getting used to.
- Small text so it may be hard to see which mode you're in, but once you remember the order this may not be a big deal
- Takes a little longer to set up since you have to put in the chain ring information

3Excellent but unstandard and therefore a failFeb 10, 2012

This was an excellent conception by Shimano...a bicycle computer that was integrated with the full grupo, and could even show visuals of the gears. The trouble I have with it...the trouble others have had with it...is that it is too non-standard, and difficult to use. Attaching the 6502 to my bike recently, I found it did not work at all. It showed some numbers, but I don't know what they were for. I hit the start/stop and mode buttons in the handlebars of my 2001 Cannondale, but there was no response. Some months ago I could get it to show the speed and distance and everything else, but that doesn't seem to be happening now. Really, it's easier just to get a new speed-and-cadence computer, than to figure out what's going on here.

The moral here (I think) is that you can't have an all-in-one bike computer. A serious bike has a user life of three years, and there may be many attachments and sensors during that lifetime.

5Bike computer that is very useful and fun to use!Dec 22, 2011

I have had this bike computer for over 2 years and I still love it. I like that it has so many features built in that it can do. I agree it takes a while to set up but it works extremely well. My Trek has 27 gears and I love the visual gear size display where I can check in a quick glance what gear I am in without looking down and back at the chain location. My Trek also has the push buttons built into the gear shift handles and it makes the computer easy to use and start.

I also like that the display can show four things at the same time like your speed, front gear selection, rear gear selection and distance ridden (For example). You can select to display multiple types of information like, gears used, total miles ridden, speed, stop watch, RPM, trip odometer, max speed, average speed, pedal count per minute, current time, and time ridden. I also like that you can quickly remove the computer from your bike so it does not fall off when hauling your bike or so someone does not steal it.

The wireless connection to the wheel works fine but it can get off momentarily in high areas of EMI/RFI interference like being close to power transformers along the street.

I like this bike computer and it makes my rides more enjoyable.

3poor wirelessNov 28, 2010

Love the ability to hook into handlebar buttons.

However, I frequently have trouble with the wireless picking up. I've sent back to Shimano and they tested it, said it worked fine, and sent back the same head unit that I've been having trouble with. Even though controls are convenient, it's not convenient to have a bike computer that only works some of the time!

I'm sure this is a good and useable piece of equipment for my cycling but it came without any instructions. How am I suppose to know how to get it to work?
