4Nice shiftersOct 25, 2007
By Ruckus A. Detritus
These shifters went on my old racing bike after I put on upright bars. They work pretty well with the Shimano 600 7spd derailleurs (parts are circa '91). You can click a little up or down to fine tune or get rid of chain rubbing on the front derailleur. They are a bit bulky but I can live with that. I trimmed down the supplied grips about an inch to better fit my narrow bars. These are good basic shifters.

4Great for the price, but need some knowledge to use it.Nov 30, 2010

First of all, don't be confused by the description of "7-speed", it refers to the rear gears. This is the whole set for both front (3-gear) and back. My left grip shifter(SRAM, older model like 10 years old?) broke, so I bought this one to replace it, installation was straight forward after watching one of the online video (just Google it), but I am not sure if I got it right, the issue is, now when I shift to '3' which is the biggest front gear, I have to go a little over the actual '3' mark on the dial... if you know what I mean. I tried to adjust the cable but if I got the gear '3' right, I would be going over the gear '1' ... so I am not sure if this is due to the incomparability with the old front derailleur or what? Anyway, I am not a die-hard mtn biker yet, so this works just fine:)

5works greatSep 29, 2011

Not clear from the item description - this set comes with both a 3 speed front gear shift and a (6/7/8) speed rear gear shift, plus the inner cable, plus two very good quality and comfort handlebar grips. So it has *almost* everything you would need. It lacks the outside sheathing for the cables, the little rubber pieces that insulate the exposed cable from your bike frame, and the cable end crimps, so if your bike requires replacement of the sheathing, rubber pieces, or crimps, you'll need to purchase separately.

I'm fairly handy with cars, but this was my first bicycle overhaul. After my initial shock of "wow this is going to be a lot more work than I thought" the swap actually went pretty smooth. There are good videos on youtube to show you how to change out the gear shifters and I highly recommend watching before you start - it will save you time and trouble. I simultaneously replaced my straight handlebar with a 5" riser handlebar for riding comfort. Since I was changing the handlebar I had to re-route the cables due to the 5" height change - this is where having the outer sheathing would have been nice. But since I didn't have it, I had to improvise by re-routing the cables. I'll probably go back and change out the sheathing later though so everything looks right.

I went from a bike that would shift through 5 of the 7 rear gears and 2 of the fronts to a bike with all 21 gears again. The instructions don't include how to adjust and fine tune, so you'll just have to play with it a bit to get the gears to shift so when it says "1" on the shifter the bike goes into first gear. But it shouldn't take much to get them shifting pretty well.

5MTB Affordable Replacement Gear ShiftersAug 31, 2011
By Richard Ballard "rjballard"
Twice on asphalt I have flipped my Trek 820 mountain bike. My SRAM front gear shifter broke on the first flip and my local bike shop replaced the shifter. My SRAM rear gear shifter broke on my second flip and I purchased this item from Amazon.com: cost. This item includes front and rear gear shifters with attached cables and two replacement rubber hand grips. A metric Allen (i.e., hex) wrench set is required for installation. Roll the rubber hand grips off / on the handlebars like rubber gloves.

5SRAM MRX Comp 8-speed shifterJan 09, 2010

SRAM makes the best mountain bike shifters; there is no doubt about it. This set is no exception; it shifts flawlessly and nearly effortlessly. In fact, were I to ask for anything, it might be to require slightly more effort to effect a shift. As it is, I can occasionally shift inadvertently. Still, that is more my problem than that of the shifters. Again, this is a great product. Shimano, eat your heart out.
