4Good, lightweight non-eyelet fendersNov 01, 2007
By Alexander M. Barron "toxic gene splicer"
Not having eyelets on my bike wasn't something I thought about until now--two years into owning it--but when I started looking for fenders I was a little shocked. From some of the product descriptions it can be hard to tell whether you need eyelets to install the fenders, but these are definitely designed for eyelet-less cycles. They also match with the attitude of most non-eyelet bikes (go speed racer!): these fenders are extremely light weight. The plastic is solid and durable, and there is farily good wheel coverage (I haven't seen the stripe of doom since I started using them). For the most part the rubberized strap installation system keeps the fenders in place (especially if you really yank on the straps), and the height of the fender is easy to adjust with a pair of locking pliers or a wrench. One downside of the light weight of the fenders is that sometimes a harsh bump or pothole will skew the fender alignment, but I haven't had a bad enough shake to ruin the coverage. Another small negative is that the required tension applied to the struts by the rubberized straps can be strong enough to pull the struts out of alignment, but that is easy enough to fix. One final small minus is that you don't get any extra straps; this is potentially bad because during the installation you have to trim the straps so they don't get caught in the spokes while riding. So if one of the straps snaps or otherwise breaks you'll be up a creek without a paddle. All in all, I highly recommend these fenders for bikes without eyelets. They are extremely light weight, durable, and easy to deal with. The price I paid (about $20) was cheap in my opinion. Get yo'self some and ditch the Butt Stripe of Doom.

5very impressedMar 11, 2008

I was a little sceptical at first seeing everyone riding around Seattle with monster fenders that nearly touched the ground. After buying and using these they kept tire water off my boddy even during heavy rain. They attach very easily and come off just as easy. I would probably run these even if I did have fender mounts on my bike because of the easy on/off factor. They will rub if not adjusted right but seem to stay in place once adjusted fairly well. Very light too; perfect for the kind of bike that doesn't come with fender mounts. I was also able to cut the rubber straps (that hold the fenders on) in half and so I have spares if the old ones ever wear out. They may not ever wear out.

2Good quality, but short fenders ineffectiveDec 15, 2008
By M. Rowell
I recommend getting full length fenders even if you have a bike without eyelets. If you're willing to do a minor amount of customization, you can simply use zip ties to mount to the frame. The quality of these fenders is great, but the fact that they are short means that you still get a lot of spray when over ~20mph. At high speeds spray off the top of the front wheel comes back in your face, spray off the lower back side of the front wheel hits your feet on the pedal down stroke and spray off the back wheel bounces off the seat tube and onto your inner calf. Full length fenders pretty much eliminate all those problems.

4Overall EffectiveFeb 08, 2008

I bought these fenders to use on a recumbent bike with 650c wheels. Like on many road bikes, longer fenders wouldn't fit. These do the job pretty well, though I still get some road spray, especially from the rear tire. But these were really the only option. They're pretty thin, but that doesn't seem to affect their performance, and they would be fine for tires up to 32mm. I'm currently using them with 23mm tires and it is obvious there is some room left over.

The SpeedEZ are easily installed and also come with some zip ties if you're concerned about them moving around too much. I haven't installed the zip ties since I've found them sturdy enough without them. Overall, if your front fork and rear brake give you enough room, I would go with longer fenders. But if you're using the type of bike that prevents this, these are pretty good substitutes and definitely better than riding without fenders in the rain. Your bike will stay cleaner and you'll stay drier using these fenders.

4Not bad...Oct 24, 2011
By fuglyducky
Living in Seattle, fenders are a necessity for anyone who rides regularly. My previous bike had full fenders and I loved them. Unfortunately, my road bike doesn't have mounts or even the space for full fenders so I had to go with these fenders. They are a decent compromise. I just mounted them yesterday and rode them this morning in a pretty decent rain.

Installation: 5/5
This was fast and simple with minimal adjustment.

Quality: 5/5
The fenders themselves are the same materials as their full fenders (thick plastic and metal poles). The mounting pads are a high quality rubber and the straps used are high quality as well.

Coverage: 3/5
This is where I am mixed. They work-ish. I had a 7 mile ride into work today in a steady rain. At 15 mph everything appears to work just fine. The front fender does not cover the top or front of the tire at all, so approaching 20+ mph and water is spraying back up on you. This probably isn't that big of an issue for a couple reasons 1) all of the grime should have shot off onto the fender, and 2) if it's raining that hard or the ground is wet enough, you are probably getting wet anyway. At the end of my ride, I looked at my bike and there is road grime all over the lower half of the bike...on the frame, cranks, in the drivetrain, etc. I will definitely have to hose the bike off when I get home.

Overall I would buy them again but if I had a bike that could take full fenders I would definitely opt for the better coverage.
