5The best and brightest AA headlight available.Dec 09, 2008
By Lisa from Portland
I compared this to last year's brightest Planet Bike LED light, and to my old NiteRider 12w halogen. It was much, much brighter than the other LED and comparable to the halogen, but with a whiter (less yellow) hue. It is so bright I plan to use it for mellow trail night-riding (uphill and flats) and combine it with the halogen for downhill stretches. I also will use it for daily commuting.
The battery life is excellent considering the brightness. A couple sets of rechargeable AA's should be all you need for daily use, even in steady (not blinky) mode. It is light weight and mounts nicely to handlebars w/o cords or battery packs. Regarding the previous comment on the handlebar clamp, I experienced the same thing but figured out I didn't have it adjusted properly. Actually the clamp is excellent, widely adjustable, and requires no rubber shims to fit any bar. The cam problem came about because it was screwed too far into the pivot. For a proper fit, back the screw out and click the strap in another notch or two, then re-adjust the cam screw. Works like a charm. The clamp fits most models of Planet Bike headlights which is nice because with a couple extra clamps (you may purchase them separately) you can instantly swap lights onto different bikes. By the way, the tail light is also the best I have found. I'm impressed with Planet Bike's products and their commitment to bike safety and advocacy. Their fenders, too, are excellent.

2initially promising, ultimately unreliableOct 09, 2009
By Richard Edwards
I was initially very pleased with the Blaze 1 Watt light. The flash mode especially is very bright and visible. I was so pleased I soon got a second one.

Alas, in real usage the light is seriously flawed and I would not recommend it.

The mounting is poorly designed. The locking cam can easily pop open if you hit a bump. I secured it with a zip tie to prevent it from opening. The cam must be tight, because the lights are not balanced and tend to tip down. The rails on the light are brittle and cracked off one one light. The light can easily pop off the mount (and if you don't have a backup light will be hard to find in the dark!). I secured the lights with rubber bands to keep them from popping off. Both lights rattled. Now only one rattles because the other popped off and I couldn't find the front part.

The other serious flaw is the lack of voltage regulation. The light is very bright with fresh batteries, but starts to dim long before the batteries are used up. If you want a bright light, you will be buying a lot of batteries. Furthermore, they will be disposable batteries, because the rechargables have a lower voltage.

I like my Planet Bike rear blinkies. But the Blaze lights are not successful. I'm interested in the new 2 watt Blaze, but it appears to use the old awful mount. And I won't touch it without voltage regulation.

4Excellent Combo Bicycle Light Set riding thru the city,Dec 03, 2008
By Bartok Kinski "A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything."
Pretty good Headlight, beam seems strong enough for slow riding thru the city. If used with a flasher Headlight it'll work more than adequate for paced commutes. The construction is a sturdy plastic.

The Headlight uses a cheap mounting bracket that isn't great. It doesn't fit very well on the handlebars so you'll end up using a cut up old tube or tape to help keep it snug. You should still be able to tilt it back and forth for use in high/low beam (level it down towards the street in front of you) and flash mode (level it up towards traffic). The "close" pin doesn't snap back to keep it in "closed" for some reason but my Headlight didn't fall off yet.

#1 beam seems to be "low" for some reason instead of high on my Headlight. #2 high beam is brighter. #3 beam is flash mode.

The Headlight is not heavy, very decent size, compact, detaches easily from quick release mounting bracket. The button on the Headlight is rubber so it doesn't respond very well when you need to change modes quickly while riding. If you are in bright city lights, it's impossible to tell what mode it is in because the beam is barely visible on the ground and there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the light/mode while you are riding. The side of the Headlight has two clear lens/indents that aren't very visible from the side. The Headlight uses 2 AA batteries (use rechargeable batteries) as there is a low run time on alkaline cell batteries (5-18 hours).

If you are in city lights, the beam is barely visible on the ground, it's best to use the flash mode but level it up towards traffic or it won't be visible. The flashing lights in flash mode in darkness are visible on stop signs for at least 8 or more long city blocks, it's very good. The "flashing" mode bright flashes, are not very disturbing since it's impossible to see the flashes because there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the flashes while you are riding.

The front end lens area of the Headlight is very small (1 inch across - light mainly visible from front) but 60 feet away, it (on high beam) appears as a larger bright dot to far away traffic. It's best to use the Headlight for seeing the street in front of you with Another flasher "to be seen" Headlight, or as a flashing light in flash mode with Another flasher Headlight, double the flashing "to be seen" lights. If using Headlight on high beam, you can even level it up towards traffic, it is very bright.

The spread of the beam (high/low) is very adequate to see in front of you riding in darkness.

When using the high/low beam it's best to level it down towards the street in front of you, the beam is very adequate for (8-15 mph, slow city riding) (5-12 mph slow trail riding in darkness). It's best to use the Headlight with a flasher "to be seen" Headlight (Blackburn Quadrant Light is very good) in traffic.

In all, some technical/practical issues with the Headlight design, but a very, very good high/low beam for slow riding thru the city.

PROS: Headlight is not heavy, very decent size, compact, uses 2 AA batteries (lighter), the beam is strong enough for slow riding thru the dark city or slow trail riding in darkness, Headlight detaches easily from mounting bracket, flashing lights in flash mode very good, spread of the beam (high/low) visible in front in darkness is very adequate, The "flashing" mode bright flashes are not very disturbing/visible to rider, If using Headlight on high beam, you can even level it up towards traffic for a very bright "to be seen" light, lower price.

CONS: cheap mounting bracket that isn't great, light not very visible from the side, button on the Headlight is rubber that doesn't respond very well when you need to change modes quickly while riding in traffic, impossible to tell what mode it is in (in bright city lights) because there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the light/mode while you are riding, low run time on alkaline cell batteries.

With this Headlight, riding my bike at night, it allows me to see reasonably well. This is a very nice "to be seen" or "to see" light. Highly recommended for those on a budget and commuting or non-commuting bike riders.

This Headlight is barely visible in the rain. If you commute in the rain or ride fast, invest in something more powerful.

Planet Bike Blinky Super Flash Rear Bicycle Light Use in conjunction with Blackburn Mars 3.0 Flasher Rear Bicycle Light and you should be set. Use a GLoWEAR Class 2 Economy Vest, Lime, L/XL #21025 / 8210HL Safety Vest to be seen in the dark as well.

5These lights work great!Oct 18, 2011
By jarom1976
I reviewed several different sets of lights before deciding on those and how glad I am that these are the ones I chose. The main light works great and really lights up the area in front of you while you are riding. The strobe effect on the front and back lights is awesome for when there is a little bit of daylight. They don't blink at the same intervals, but rather more of an alternating effect which makes a huge difference for cars to see you. While riding in the morning I always pass several bikes with different kinds of lights and I haven't seen one yet that is anywhere as good as the one I'm using. Get 'em, you won't regret it!

4You WILL be seenFeb 14, 2011

I found this light set as I was looking for lights that met 3 conditions: 1. Flashing 2. Usable light output for primary illumination at night. 3. Less than $100.

1. Flashing: The 1 Watt headlamp has a attention getting strobe setting that is amazing. The tail light can NOT be beat for the price. I had to aim it down a little bit as I was not comfortable with it pointing towards car drivers eyes at night. If someone runs over you, it's because they were aiming for you, not because they didn't see you.

2. Usable Light Output for Primary Night Illumination: I was surprised to find that the headlight actually has usable light output for moderate speeds on the street at night. I would not suggest it for high speed off road trails at night, but it's more than adequate for street travel in the dark. And it's bright enough that you want to make sure that it's not shining into oncoming traffic.

3. Less than $100: Self explanatory. Very very good value so far. I did not give it 5 stars since the mounting bracket left something to be desired but it has been fine so far.
