Upholds Kalloy Seatpost TraditionsJul 29, 2009
By G. Morrison

A very fine seatpost. Completely seated in my 18" frame (Medium) Giant Cypress ST's seat tube, the seat clamp sticks up perhaps a couple inches beyond where seat clamps normally end up. Fortunately, I need to raise the seat slightly--so, I'm glad about the 400mm length (longer than usual). Keep this in mind if you need a smaller frame bike. (The point: This extended length might make such a bike not fit you, (the post and seat will angle back somewhat--not straight upward) so, perhaps 350mm or smaller may be more appropriate.)
The width of this (29.2mm) is somewhat rare. Find out what the width of your seat tube is--it's probably marked where the seat post mark (or hole) indicates the seat tube should no longer be extended further....
The Kalloy replaces a stock suspension straight post combined with a familiar traditional steel clamp--I certainly noted the stiffness of aluminum alloy compared to the stock suspension seat post in riding--that's normal. The stock seat post, sans clamp, is slightly lighter, yet the clamp adds considerable weight, making the old-style "granny" combination predictably heavier. (I imagine the traditional steel clamp design hasn't been improved upon in, perhaps, 150 years! Anyway, it's been a long time--far too long, don't you think?! I suppose it would survive a direct nuclear blast, however!)
As with many components that are black and installed on less-expensive bikes, the black is painted on--not anodized, so it does scratch up slightly from the seat tube/clamp friction. (Do we need black paint?)
One thing great about this and other such seat posts is that they don't require traditional nuts and wrenches. A mere day before I received the Kalloy post, after riding about five miles, the nuts of the ST's heavy steel seat clamp loosened up slightly, making the seat tilt randomly up and down. I thought that I had included a suitable wrench with my allen wrenches, yet, sadly, I was mistaken. Needless to say, it was very difficult getting the bike back to the car on a very hot day. This won't happen with the Kalloy and other better posts--they allow less play in seat position and simply won't allow such wild tilts: Also, they use metric allen bolts exclusively--allen wrench sets for touring are light and compact--they lodge "forever" in bike bags....
In summary, the Kalloy is great step up in serious bike seat posts from traditional straight seat post/heavy steel clamp combos (even given suspension)--the latter "granny" combo I'll avoid like the plague (swine flu?!) from now on! If one desires suspension, serious-bike versions incorporating this type of design (alloy/integrated clamp) certainly are available here on Amazon. I'm certain these are superior to "granny's" solution! Suspension likely does add a little weight....
