5Commuter Bike Bag - Super FlexibleSep 01, 2011
By floodmouse
I do a year-round bike commute to work. This model of bag is great because it folds down small when it is not in use. Then you can open out your bag and stuff a 25-pound bag of cat litter inside, or a bag of regular groceries. I buy them in pairs. One bag goes on each side of my trail rack. I find it helpful to attach some extra bungee cords to the loops on the bottom of the bag. I have tried a different style of pannier that latches closed on top, but I prefer the Sunlite grocery getter bags that are open on top so you can stuff them to the maximum with odd-shaped things you might pick up at garage sales on your way home. I used my first pair of bags for 3+ years in all weather until they started to wear out. I'm currently on my second pair (still look brand new). I'm thinking about getting a third pair so I can mount them on my spare bike.

Several points to make here... #1 being, look for these through your LBS (local bicycle shop) first. Figure in the shipping cost & I bought mine for considerably less $$$ simply by shopping locally. Next would be, I have no clue as to what Marcie Glicksman is talking about in her review. These are not backpacks & they do come equipped with stiff inner liners that need to be inserted before using. Otherwise - yes, the sides & bottom will bulge out & be weak. With the inner liners they are strong & durable.

As I have NO CAR, 99.9% of my transportation needs are met on two wheels. I'm off to the grocery store at least once a week with these Sunlite Grocery Getters strapped to the rear rack. You may need to shorten the bungee cords a bit by looping it around itself once or twice. Last point...if you load these up as I do, you'll need a bicycle with strong wheels & hubs; no discount store specials. My 2011 Raleigh Sojourn came factory equipped with a good rear rack. If your bike has no rear rack as yet, look into an Axiom Journey Tubular Alloy Racks. Weight capacity - 154lbs!!!

bought this bag to use as a backpack carrier and I had to reinforce both of the outside seems because they ripped completely, and this is after about 4 months of use. I guess it could stand up if you were putting light loads in, but I wasn't carrying lots of heavy textbooks or something like that
