4Solid rack, easily installed on my rigid frame ATBOct 30, 2007
By N. Caniglia
Appears to be solid construction. Delta rates the cargo limit at 40lbs. The weakest points, if you were to overload the rack, would probably be the height adjustment screws; at some amount of weight (likely way over the 40lb limit) I suppose they would shear off. Of course those are also the strong points in terms of fitting to multiple sized/shaped bikes.

Here's how the height adjustment works: you have a tube within a tube. The outer tube of each leg has 3 wholes drilled in the surface about an inch apart vertically (the wholes don't extend through to the wheel facing side). The inner tube (narrower) fits within the outer tube at the bottom of the leg and is ultimately the attachment to the bike's rear dropout's eyelets. The inner tube contains just 1 threaded whole. So you place the screw through one of the outer tube's wholes and into the inner tubes whole giving you 3 height settings. The middle one was about right for my 26" wheel ATB.

It comes with essentially 3 ways to mount the upper part of the rack to your frame. If you have eyelets on your seat stays you can attach to the inside of the eyelets (1) or outside (2). No eyelets? Then they give you 2 wrap-around brackets to attach to your seat stays (3). The instructions mention an available (but not provided) fourth way of attachment using your brake bridge.

Installation instructions weren't too bad if you even need them.

There's a bracket welded to the back of the rack to hang your rear reflector on, which is nice since the rack and/or your cargo will likely block it from view if mounted on the bike frame. However the bracket kind of obstructs the ability to wrap a cargo strap centered around the back of the rack to follow underneath and around to the front--probably wouldn't bother anyone but me anyway.

3Forget universalJan 15, 2008
By D. Rodrigues "Fuzzy string theory"
This is not a bad rack. It's light and seems to be well made. Nevertheless, it annoys me when vendors claim a "universal" ability to mount on any bike. Out of the box, no way will this work on my frame, which happens to be a Gary Fisher Mendota. To make this thing work, I need to make a trip to the hardware store to buy some aluminum straps in order to fabricate the necessary bracket extensions. Had the packaged connectors been about 4 inches longer it might have worked.

Took me about 15 minutes to mount it.
Seems strong and solid, glad I bought it.

3I got rackedAug 06, 2008

This is my 2nd Delta brand rack and I like the way their rack top is setup. Lots of holes for mounting brackets, hooks, etc. (My other is a Post Porter.)

I think Universal is misleading. The height is "universal" to a point which is why I bought it, but the mountain arms are way too short. I just barely got mine to fit. But it fits and it's solid. The rack also came with mounting clips/brackets to go around seat stays that don't have rack brazons. (Another alternative is a clever Sunlite product that is basically a seatpost mounted brazon.) Installation was easy, but I can see how it might be difficult for those who have never installed one since it doesn't come with instructions.

Function wise, it's a rack. It holds my bags and panniers just fine. If you use large panniers, it might be worthwhile to get a rack with a more spacious rear guard. My delta expedition panniers would be swaying into the wheel if it weren't for my fender supports. A great little feature is the rear light mounting bracket.

The adjustable height is great. I can move it from bike to bike and adjust for different wheel sizes, fender clearance, etc.

3 stars because the mounting arms should be longer.
