4Break in takes a whileJan 11, 2012
By Paolo
Bought the pedals for my wife as she likes the SPD type cleat, but with Shimano, you get cleat adjustments while you don't with the egg beaters so it takes some time to wear down cleats so that they clip in without too much effort. But once they wear to a certain point, you can un-clip when you least expect it.

The cleat is not high quality like Shimano's steel SPD's. Overall, my wife has stopped complaining so I guess they are working okay.

5Quick engagement, no hot spotsJul 05, 2010
By Charles A. Miess
I find the engagement of the eggbeater to be quicker than the platform-type pedals. At first, I was concerned about the possibility of 'hot spots' where the bottom of my shoe pressed against the pedal. However, I've since done up to 100 road miles in a day wearing mountain bike shoes and have yet to feel any hot spots. In addition, worn out pedals can be easily rebuilt with an inexpensive rebuild kit.

5Egg Beaters - Simple and SpectacularJun 24, 2010
By Chris LaVesser "Goofball on bowed legs"
I expect my pedals to keep me connected to my bike, until I'm ready to come out. I expect you expect your pedals to do the same. And to these ends we must all choose our pedals.

In nearly every facet of my life I favor function over form, and I favor reliability over feature richness. A pretty thing that doesn't work when I need it to is useless. A multi-functional device that achieves mediocrity in its 26 capabilities will fall short of my expectations when I most need it. I demand something simple, functional, and reliable.

Enter the Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals! These are, quite simply, simplicity. You'd be hard pressed to engineer a mountain biking pedal that performs as reliably and has fewer failure modes than the Egg Beater. I ride HARD, and I have never been disappointed with my decision to ride Egg Beaters on all my mountain bikes. These pedals work reliably when they're clean, when they're dirty, and anywhere in between.

There are several models of Egg Beaters. I find the SL model is a perfect balance between price and weight. If I was fast enough to need titanium pedals, I'd have a sponsor. So I buy the SL models because they are STRONG and affordable. But I reckon you'll find the same simple reliability in all the Egg Beater models.

Get a pair, and pedal hard.

5For the Avid Cyclist, Looking for Simple, lightweight, & functional pedalsNov 10, 2011
By Westminister "Westley"
I use my road bike as a commuter, and for extended rides on weekends. I needed something light and durable. I use to have SPD, and before that, Look. I was told the Crank Brothers Egg beaters SL's were the lightest pedals for mountain bikes. I liked the metal look and the blue spring, and took a chance and bought them. I have been using these for over three years now, and have determined that these pedals are he only ones I would purchase again. I have had zero issues.

I tend to walk around in my cycling shoes, so that is why I have mountain bike racing shoes and needed the grip, the smooth soles of road shoes were problematic. I have been known to dive into traffic like a bicycle messenger, and these pedals have given me the confidence to do so.

The construction of the pedals are very solid, and I can't imagine bending any of the wings (I read a review where someone said they did). There is a little play, but it has never affected my peddling and I enjoy my ability to keep up with automobile (city) traffic. I have also never had a problem with accidentally unclipping. The speed in which to get in and out of these pedals are what I appreciate the most, compared to my experience with other types.

I want to be clear, I have owned these pedals for well over three years, and they have held up and still look new even after my frequent use. They are the best pedals I have own thus far...

3Good, But Short life spanMar 19, 2010
By W. Lynch "Pioneer51"
I like the egg beater pedals because of ease of entry, good looks and generally light weight. I recently purchased my third pair. There lies the problem. If you ride a lot , my experience has been that they last about 18 months max. I typically ride 3500 to 4500 miles per year and this pedal simply wears out within 18 months. Cleats are good for about 3000+ miles before they begin to clip out on their own. I'm a roadie only so I don't impart a lot of abuse as on single track.
