5Eggbeater rebuild kit and amazon.com descriptionFeb 13, 2010
By Charles A. Miess
I have always been pleased with Crank Brothers products and the rebuild kit is no exception. The parts are high quality and the instructions are clear and concise. In addition, the Crank Brothers web site has videos to illustrate the rebuild procedure. I do recommend, however, that you check your pedals frequently and rebuild them before the bearing cartridge falls apart. That makes disassembly a bit more difficult because the outside bearing shell is hard to get out.

I gave the product five stars, but the description of the kit on the amazon site is worth only one star. All six rebuild kits say they're for one set of 2002 eggbeater pedals. In fact, only one of the six is for the 2002 eggbeater. You have to go by the name of the kit to get the one you want unless you want the eggbeater. None of the kits have eggbeater in their name. After much research at other web sites, I discovered that the kit for the 2002 eggbeater has a (2) suffix and for subsequent eggbeaters a (3) suffix.

The next question was how do you know if the pedal you need to rebuild is a 2002 or later version. Again, I had to do quite a bit of online research to learn that the 2002 has a rubber end cap and the 2003 and subsequent have a plastic or metal end cap with a screwdriver slot.

This is not the first time that I've run into this kind of problem at amazon.com. I have found that many bicycle parts do not have an adequate technical description for me to make the proper selection. Sometimes I get the missing information from other sites and come back to amazon. Other times I buy from another source.

3Expensive for two common 686 sealed bearings, and some cheap miscellaneous hardwareMay 07, 2012
By Raleighphile "Have Raleigh, will travel"
The weak spot of any CrankBrothers pedal is the bearing. It's small, not very well sealed in the pedal, and often doesn't get the attention it should get by the rider/mechanic. So it fails first -usually before the inside bushing even starts to get any wear on it. Usually the only time the bushing will see wear is after the bearing starts to fail and the pedal body begins to grind on the bushing because the end bearing isn't holding it straight any longer. After the bearing totally fails the bushing can be in for some serious hurt.

But otherwise, if the bearing is kept lubricated with grease, and is replaced before it becomes sloppy or fails altogether the rest of the parts do NOT need to be replaced.

686 bearings are common motor bearings and can be bought at a bearing shop for $2 each. Even here on Amazon they can be found for under $4 and shipping isn't very expensive. 686-2RS Bearing 6x13x5 Sealed Miniature Ball Bearings the price will be even cheaper if you buy a 10-pack of them.

Keep the bearing clean, dry, & lubed and it will last a long time, or just replace it often before the bushing gets damaged and clean/regrease the bushing, seals, and the spindle itself. The Rebuild kit is over-priced and is simply CrankBrothers sticking it to their customers and making an exorbitant profit off of its loyal customers. They even use a cheaper bearing in most of their new pedals that will cause you to buy a rebuild kit sooner -just to make more money. Don't get me wrong, I love the eggbeater series of pedals as they are the best clipless pedal design -but I'm not happy with the way CrankBrothers cheapens out on their quality or fails to stand behind their products, even charging their customers for their own mistakes/cheapness.

The only reason I'm buying this kit is because I bought a set of 'beaters used (cheap) that needed a rebuild with new bushings -otherwise I'd just put in 686's and be done with it.

One last thing -the confusing way CrankBrothers labels these kits and markets them, and the cruddy job the Amazon sellers describe and photograph them makes this product even worse. The photograph for this (3) kit is NOT EVEN CLOSE to what you get. You have to do all the research on what kit to get for your pedal and if you look at the picture you are going to end up with the wrong thing.

Just buy a couple of 686 sealed bearings and replace them before the bearings get really bad and save yourself a TON of money and grief -maybe buy this rebuild kit every 3rd or 4th bearing swap as the bushings finally wear out. They don't wear nearly as fast as the bearings do.

4Eggbeater rebuild kitMay 17, 2010

This is an easy to perform maintenance kit for eggbeater-type pedals. It has straightforward instructions and takes about 10 minutes to do. I just wish Crank Brothers would design a more durable inboard bushing rather than the plastic piece supplied.

Excellent product! The rebuild is very quick and easy, and makes the pedal like new.
