4Gets the job doneAug 25, 2005
By Oren Iny
I actually own the Velo 8 model, which has 3 features more than this one.

With a very comfortable design, the Velo 5 cycle computer offers the rudimentary set of features that your average cyclist needs.

Ease-of-use are its strong selling point; however, once installed on the handlebar, the unit housing might need a little strengthening.

Overall, if you need a cycle computer and are a tight budget, the Velo 5 is the model for you as it gets the job done!

3Good basic computer. .Oct 26, 2006
By Kersi Von Zerububbel "Kersi"
The Velo-5 is just what I needed. Basic stuff like time, distance, odometer, and speed. Installing it is easy and quick. One problem is the magnet. The flap that holds the magnet in place is plastic and does tend to slip once in a while. So before every ride I make sure the plastic flap that holds the magnet is tight.

Next item that I have a problem with is the manual. The visuals are for the Velo-8 not the Velo-5. But that's no big deal. The font size is TERRIBLE!. For guys like me, over 59, use a magnifier or you'll get a headache. Mr. Product Manager, PLEASE put a copy of the manual on the web in at least 10 point font so folks like me can read the darn thing.

All in all an ok product.

2Quality leaves a lot to be desiredJul 27, 2006
By Matthew Hearn "cock-eyed optimist"
I purchased the VELO-5 at my local bike shop about a week ago. I had had a computer in the past on a different bike; I don't remember the model, but I bought it at Walmart for $10 or so. I was hoping that a major bicycle accessories company would have a slightly more reliable product.

When I opened the package, I was mildly disappointed; the computer, sensor, and wire were mounted via plastic cinch strips, instead of proper mounting brackets, like the cheap computer I'd last used. Nevertheless, I installed it as indicated in the directions; I had no trouble with the sensor and computer unit, but when I attempted to install the spoke-mounted magnet I immediately stripped the threads on the cheap plastic "bolt" that holds it in place. I wasn't using a pair of pliers, just my fingers. In the end I was able to get it reasonably secure, until I started riding and it immediately slide on the spoke to the rim and the sensor couldn't pick it up. After a few miles, the magnet loosened itself up and flew off the wheel into the woods.

Luckily, I discovered I still had the all-metal magnet/bolt from the old computer I had, and put that on. Worked like a charm.

I wouldn't suggest buying the Velo-5 unless you already have a spoke-mounted magnet lying around that you can use. The computer itself works great; it's accurate, even at low speeds (a major problem for the cheapo Kmart computer I had), and the single-button operation couldn't be simpler to use. If they'd start using a metal backer on the magnet, I'd give it 5 stars.

5WRONG Model Number/Pictured item sent.Aug 13, 2009
By Eric E. Holtz
Hello, I have had the Velo VL500 Bicycle Computer for 4 years and 10,000 miles. It had been perfect through all weather conditions (Midwest) until an accident left it broken. I ordered a new one based on the advertised model number. I received, instead, the Velo VL510, which I was told is the newer version. I did not want the newer version! That is why I oredered from Performance Downhill. Their product description mislead me into buying what I expected to be as advertised. Instead of contacting me regarding the discrepency in their ad, they sent me what I DID NOT order. I don't know if the newer version is as good as my old one; the point is, if item is not available, don't use a different model number/picture to sell another item on the assumption that it will be OK. Bottom line: if I wanted a VL510 instead of the VL500, I would have ordered the VL510 in the first place. The VL500 went through you-know-where and back without a single problem. I have had and do currently have other Cateye products which perform without incident. Sincerely, Eric Holtz.

4A good, basic piece of equipment...Oct 18, 2007
By Jim
A simple straightforward piece of equipment. Does all the basic functions well. Easy to install, It fit my large-frame Trek bike with no problems. I would have liked another 12" of cable to wrap the line a bit more, but it was adequate. Both the sensor and readout mount solidly with supplied cable ties. They provided enough cable ties, though I used a few extra I had laying around the house. Easy to read... even with my aging eyes. I'm a regular rider and can't imagine why most riders would need to spend more for a higher-end model. Delivery was suprisingly fast via USPS... about 4 days as I recall to Maryland.
