Good for city lifeJan 03, 2008

Ok, these bags aren't waterproof, so that's why I didn't give five stars. But when I had these bags, I went everywhere and carried everything in them- no hassle (I put things in plastic bags if they couldn't get wet). Since they were stolen, I went out and bought an Ortlieb bag thinking it would be awesome, and I keep wishing I just bought another pair of these Appalachian bags. They got room. They're simple, easy to open and close (unlike my new bag). Oh, and if they do get stolen, you're only out thirty bucks instead of a hundred. I felt like they were simple and handy and good for someone like me who bikes around the city, bikes for shopping, and bikes with kids (all those water bottles and extra clothes actually fit!).

Not Expensive, But Not GreatOct 13, 2007
By Critical Reasoner This pannier set is a fairly inexpensive option but it is also not the best as to versatility or fit. I have a Topeak rack (hardly uncommon) and this set of bags can just barely be made to stay on. The Velcro straps intended to hold the front and back securely to the rack are too short for my rack. When I pull tightly I can get them to bight with about 1/2 inch of Velcro grabbing. This will certainly be a problem after the Velcro ages a bit. The hooked bungee straps for attaching the bag to the vertical rack brace bars is a very awkward way of doing so. It takes bending down, reaching into tight spaces and much dexterity to secure/unsecure the bags when taking them into the grocery store. I have found myself just leaving them on all the time because they are a bit of a pain to detach and reattach.
Also, and this is not directly a knock on the product, they are fairly small for those grocery store visits. These marketing photos would be more helpful were they taken while secured to a bicycle for perspective in sizing. I can get a loaf of bread, cheese, and some vegetables and a bit of fruit inside but not too much more.
This being said, they look decent, seem to be of decent quality fabric and the reflective stripe is appreciated.
Were I to choose again, I would opt for another product over these. What I thought I would prefer (the two sides being permanently attached to one another) I now see as a detriment. I would prefer a set of independent panniers with hooks for attaching to the rack as opposed to these hooked bungees. I'll keep them and get some use out of them but there were certainly better options for my situation.

For People On The Go...Mar 08, 2009
By Old Hippie I give these panniers four stars for what they are...inexpensive. They aren't designed to be the best & they're not. But, for the week-end biker or student looking to carry books to & from school, they are great. They are water resistant - not water proof. They go on & off easily. Do not leave your bike unattended as they are also stolen easily. The "Lifetime Guarantee" reads that the seller is responsible for all warranty questions and/or solutions. So, you may want to pay a few extra bucks through a local bike shop. Unlike another reviewer, I have had NO PROBLEM with the bungee cords (not CHORDS as in music - dummy) breaking. I have had no problem with them flapping around & getting tangled in the spokes. It's a stretch to get the Velcro straps around the back & front of the rack. Simple solution: Use a bungee cord wrapped around the front of your rack & loop the Velcro around that. Great panniers? No. Good enough for the casual cyclist & week-end warriors? You bet. I love mine.

Useful, better than expectedJul 07, 2011
By Mommabiker I purchased these bags, mainly because of the price, and they appeared to be bigger (meaning had more loading capacity)than others in the same price range. When the bags arrived, I was a little disappointed before I even opened them because their size was alot smaller than I had anticipated. However, when I opened the bag up, and inspected/installed them to my bike, I had some hope that they would be sufficient for me. My plan was to use these bags for school, so I would be carrying 2 heavy textbooks, a 3 ring binder, and a full set of sheets, not to mention a cooler and all the biking necessities like the lock, riding vest, gloves, helmet and defense spray! School is a 26 mile trek roundtrip for me daily, (I go on the weekends) so I needed something that would withstand the rigors of that much riding. I have to say, they are made well, and have withstood the weight I've put in them. Sometimes, they are so heavy it's like having my toddler on the back sans the child seat carrier! The bags DO hold all mjy stuff, albeit tightly, but I can get it in there with some careful packing! I think if they were larger like I had expected, I would be carrying needless junk with me, which in turn would make my ride harder. These bags right now are perfect for ME, and my needs. If I were a long distance biker going cross country, they would not cut it, but I'm not. Keep in mind when you're buying them what you actually NEED them for verus what you WANT them for, and I think you'll find these are a fantastic deal. I would buy from Axiom and Amazon again. I've had mine for about a month now, and no complaints so far. Maybe I'll update this after I've put more miles on them and see how they hold up!

Does the job for city life, needs mounting changeMay 31, 2010

As other reviewers have noted, this product does not have particularly good mounting method. I had to adapt it to fit my "Planet Bike" rear carrier. What I did: Towards the front of the rack, I attached a screw, so that it would act as a pin. Then I put a hole in the top of the pannier flat-piece at the location, and glued a nylon fender washer there to prevent tears. When mounted, the pin prevents the panniers from sliding off the back. The pannier lower attachments, which are bungee-like straps, are hokey but work, if you don't mind the bags possibly flapping outwards a bit.
The up side: Big enough to carry a netbook, complete soccer gear including boots, lamps, and miscellaneous other stuff. The lower front of the panniers have the corner cut off (see product photo) which helps prevent foot hitting the bags. Good value for money.
If you have ultra-light camping gear specially designed for compactness, then these bags are big enough for a short camping trip. Not enough for an expedition.
